New Achievement: Greta Thunberg Gets Salt Spreading Trucks Named After Her

She’s been named as TIME magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019, and had a tree named after her in Australia, but now climate change activist Greta Thunberg has been given the greatest honour of all. That’s right, a salt spreader has been named after her.

Manchester City Council put out a poll to the public to name its new fleet of salt trucks, which are out and about in the northern city this winter.

And 17-year-old Greta evidently captured the public imagination sufficiently to inspire the naming of one of the council’s eight trucks, which will be called Gritter Thunberg. See what they did there?

Greta’s salt truck is just the tip of the iceberg (geddit); some of the others included in the fleet are Spreaddie Mercury (obviously after Freddie Mercury), Grit Astley (after Rick Astley, although this one seems a bit of a reach), and Snowel Gallagher, after Oasis’ Noel Gallagher.

Others to make the final cut include Basil Salty (after Basil Fawlty) and Snowbi-Gone Kenobi (Star Wars‘ Obi-Wan Kenobi) – a double pun for you there.

It’s been fun!

Councillor Angeliki Stogia, Executive Member for Environment, Planning and Transport, said: “So many suggestions were received that it was hard to whittle them down, but the public decided on some cracking names for our new gritters – including a Mancunian connection in ‘Snowel Gallagher’.”

Residents can also ask Alexa (that’ll be the Amazon Echo, then) whether their local area has been gritted – and they get to find out which gritter has done the deed, if so.

Greta hasn’t responded to the news as yet, but if she does, the likelihood is she’ll post about the accolade on Twitter. She famously used the social media platform to troll Donald Trump when the US President sarcastically posted about her.

Quote-tweeting a video in which Wired reported on Greta’s speech to the United Nations, which castigated politicians for their failure to deal with the climate crisis, Trump posted: “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

Rather than try to respond to him, she changed her Twitter bio to: “A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.”

She also changed her Twitter name to ‘Sharon’ after a blunder on Celebrity Mastermind got 2020 off to a solid start. Casualty star Amanda Henderson left viewers in hysterics when she was asked a question about Greta and her book No One is Too Small to Make a Difference, which was released last year.

Quiz master John Humphries asked the actor: “The 2019 book entitled No One is Too Small to Make a Difference is a collection of speeches made by a Swedish climate change activist. What’s her name?”

A stumped Henderson simply shook her head, saying: “Sharon?”

It’s only a matter of time before she picks up on this one.
